Welcome and Introductions

  • The committee introduced themselves to the new members and guests of the committee.

CIM Course Proposal Review – Dan Faltesek, Heath Henry

  • One course in Baccalaureate Core Committee (BCC) queue. It has previously been reviewed by the committee.
  • Reviews are assigned by the co-chairs.
  • We are not expecting too many proposals this year with the upcoming changes to the Baccalaureate Core (BC).
  • If BC courses make changes, they will still need to be reviewed by the committee, so there may be a few coming through the committee in that way.
  • Learning Outcome (LO) changes will now be going through CIM.

Updates from Baccalaureate Core Director – McKenzie Huber

  • The BC Reform Proposal was approved at the October 13 Faculty Senate session.
  • Structure:
    • Part I – From Here to Career
      • Transitions – 2 credits
      • Beyond OSU Career Integration – 0 credits
        • Students can fulfill this credit with career fairs, internships, etc. Other options may come up during implementation.
        • Experiential
        • Flexible; can double-dip with major requirements
    • Part II – Foundational Skills
      • Quantitative Literacy & Analysis – 4 credits
      • Writing Foundations (WR 121) – 4 credits
      • Writing Elevation – 3 credits
      • Communication, Media, & Society – 3 credits
    • Part III – Modes of Inquiry
      • Art & Humanities (2 courses, one local, one global) – 6-8 credits
      • Social Sciences – 3-4 credits
      • Scientific Inquiry& Analysis (Natural Science) (two courses) – 8 credits
    • Part IV – Social Justice
      • Difference, Power & Oppression (DPO): Foundations – 3-4 credits
        • Foundational knowledge
      • Advanced Difference, Power & Oppression – 3-4 credits
        • Help students understand how DPO manifests in the context of their major and their field.
    • Part V – Integrative & Applied Learning
      • Seeking Solutions – 3-4 credits
        • Interdisciplinary team project for students to solve complex global problems
      • Writing Intensive Curriculum – In major
        • WIC will remain unchanged as a category
          • Total of 42-48 credits
  • PAC and Health requirement not included in the new curriculum.

          • How is it marketed internally and externally?
            • Chairs and co-chairs of these workstream committees will all be on the Core Team, as well as some other outside faculty, such as advisors, OSU-Cascades and other partners.
            • Meet every couple of weeks and will report back to the Steering Committee.
            • Ideally 4-5 faculty for each category to develop Learning Outcomes
              • Total of 40-50 faculty needed to cover all the categories
              • Faculty can volunteer or nominate other faculty for the LOCR committee via a Qualtrics form.
                • Will nominated faculty have a chance to fill in the form?
                  • There is a spot on the form to note that the nominated faculty member has been informed of the nomination.
              • Aiming for as broad and diverse a group as possible.
              • Encourage reaching out to the deans so that they’re aware of the process and ask that they encourage faculty to nominate others or to volunteer themselves.

    • Maintain continuity for the next couple of years through implementation
    • Every Monday or so, a policy or audit will be sent to the committee. By Thursday, the committee will have a discussion about the policy.
      • Will current BC courses be grand-fathered into the new BC?
        • Currently, no. There are no policies in place, no new LOs or category requirements in place. Intended for the Bacc Core to start with a fresh slate.
