Course Reviews

  • CH 220 Careers in Chemistry – Beyond I
    • No major issues.
    • More details could be in CIM but there is enough detail in the syllabus.
    • Minor grammatical issues.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 8 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • ANS 210 Animal Sciences Careers I – Beyond I
    • No major issues.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 8 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • BA 160 CoB Career and Major Exploration – Beyond I
    • No major issues.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 9 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • BA 381 Personal and Professional Development – Beyond I
    • LO matrix on syllabus could have more details. The CIM matrix has additional details that could be used.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • ENSC 101 Environmental Sciences Orientation – Beyond I
    • Cascades syllabus has an incomplete sentence in the LOs.
    • Cascades syllabus not quite as well done as Corvallis and Ecampus but meets minimum requirements.

Action: Motion to approve with suggestions to fix errors; seconded. The motion passed with 1 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • MTH 201 Career Explorations in Mathematics – Beyond I
    • Not many details on how LOs are met through the essential assignments.
      • Very generalized and vague.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 1 vote in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • FOR 008 Beyond OSU II: Engage – Beyond II
    • No major issues.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • MAST 300 Society, Culture, and the Marine Environment – Beyond II
    • Final product is a toolbox for career pathways they pursue to solve real world marine studies problems, cover letter and resume. It sounds like they start this in Beyond I. But it is somewhat unclear what the career artifact is.
      • Connected to MAST 201, which has not come to the CEC yet, which describes the toolbox with much more details. It is much clearer that this is a career artifact – it will be refined in this class.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • NMC 418 Viral Content (second review) – Beyond II
    • Was missing the Ecampus redevelopment proposal, in addition to other issues.
    • They sent an email response to the co-chair, but they did not submit any of the changes into CIM.
    • They did submit the Ecampus redevelopment proposal.

Action: Motion to roll back and remind them that they need to make revisions in CIM and address the remaining issues: A more detailed description of how students will apply ideas from the major and course content to their future careers and career development; more specificity on how the assignments directly assess the LO; seconded. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 1 abstention.

  • BA 398 Sustainable Capitalism: Exploring Power, Prosperity, and Justice – DPO-A
    • Needs Ecampus redevelopment proposal.
    • Otherwise looks good but there are multiple liaison comments.
      • How often does the class meet and how big are the sections?
        • Sliding by in recitation policy, but not what is typically seen.
        • The course is capped at 25 and would not typically require recitation.
        • Would likely exceed the 25-cap due to need and the college does not typically employ Teaching Assistants.

Action: Motion to conditionally approve, pending Ecampus redevelopment proposal; seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • BB 332 Molecular Medicine – DPO-A
    • Minor issues with the matrix on LO2 – what are ‘social justice theories’?
      • Systems of ideas that analyze the form and function of power in society and how it is distributed…
      • Would naming the theories force the instructors to be more rigid in their teaching?
    • The poster presentation session seems too informal to be an essential assignment. Are all students participating in the oral presentation?

Action: Motion to conditionally approval pending receipt of revised syllabus naming the social justice concepts/ideas used in LO2; seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • CH 380 Chemistry and Environmental Racism – DPO-A
    • Same minor issue as BB 332 with LO2.

Action: Motion to conditionally approval pending receipt of revised syllabus naming the social justice concepts/ideas used in LO2; seconded. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 1 abstention.

  • BI 344 DNA, Identities, and Societies (second review) – DPO-A
    • Did not address the description of LO2 as requested. The rest of the class looks good. Is this a minor or major issue?
      • Responses in CIM were not improved.
      • It was specifically asked for and while there is potentially enough evidence in the syllabus that they meet the minimum requirements, it is difficult to find.

Action: Motion to send back and request that they address the original issues with LO 2; seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • NMC 493 Media and Power (second review) – DPO-A
    • The assignment proposed in CIM is not the same in the syllabi.
      • They reference a paper by which the essential assignment is assessed.
      • The biggest solution would be to change the essential assignment.
      • LO 1 and 3 – assessments are still not sufficient.
    • Responses to CIM do address the criteria.

Action: Motion to rollback for improvements on assessment of LO1 and LO3. Suggest they work with the Assessment office. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 1 abstention.

  • TA 460 Creating Social Change in the Theatre Industry – DPO-A
    • Similar issues as NMC 493.
      • Reflections lackluster on assessing the LOs.
    • Descriptions in CIM were very redundant.

Action: Motion to rollback to provide significantly more detail on how the course achieves the LOs, change the assessments to meet the LOs and to occur later in the term. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 1 abstention.

  • PSY 366 Empowering Climate Action for a Sustainable Future (second review) – Seeking Solutions
    • Are they solving a psychological problem? The addressed issues have been fixed but is it appropriate for the category?
      • With the revisions and the conversations between CLA and CEOAS, the course is a good option.
    • Minor issue with the course description – it does not fit what they are teaching in the class.

Action: Motion to conditionally approve pending updated course description that better reflects the content of the course; seconded. The motion passed with 10 votes in favor, 1 vote in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • H 244 Science of Human & Planetary Health (second review) – Scientific Inquiry
    • No major issues.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 9 votes in favor, 1 vote in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • GEO 203 Evolution of Planet Earth – Scientific Inquiry
    • LO 3 reflection does not address daily life and decision making.
      • Included example shows how political policy around science would impact the economy. Does not show how science impacts.

Action: Motion to rollback to describe how the essential assignments for LO1 and LO3 address all elements of the LO. (Recommend considering using the lab report instead of quiz for LO1 essential assignment); seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • HHS 120 Disease Detectives – Scientific Inquiry
    • No major issues.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.

  • H 119 Live Free & Die: Examining Life Expectancy in the U.S. – Social Science
    • Meets all learning outcomes
    • Raised in liaison comments – introduction to a general field of social science?
      • Yes.
    • Would have liked a better description of LO 3, specifically students roles in structures and processes in the essential assignment.

Action: Motion to approve; seconded. The motion passed with 11 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 abstentions.
