For context, students in all CACREP programs (specialized national accreditor of counseling programs) are required to complete 600 total/240 direct hours. This accreditation standard was originally created more than 30 years ago, based on the formula of 15 semester weeks x 20 hours x 2 academic semesters. In alignment with the original intent, most institutions on semester systems have historically and currently required students to complete internship over just two academic terms, averaging 300 hours for 3 semester credits (equivalent of 300 hours for 4.5 quarter credits). Converted to quarter credits, this is 66.6 hours per quarter credit hour. The OSU Corvallis counseling program has, for the past 15+ years, required school counseling students to complete 600 hours over 3 quarters (3 x 3cr = 9cr total) and clinical mental health counseling students to complete 600 hours over 4 quarters (4 x 3cr = 12 credits total). Thus, our ratios have ranged from 50-66.6 field placement hours per credit hour, which is right in range with the common semester average. ~Thom Field
