Welcome

The co-chairs called the meeting to order and invited the committee members to introduce themselves and share their backgrounds and experience with Core Education and the former Baccalaureate Core. The co-chairs went over the agenda and expectations for the meeting and what will be coming up next week.

CIM Orientation

  • Purpose and status of Core Education Curriculum – The co-chairs oriented the committee to the committee’s mission and goals. Two groups make up the Core Ed program – the Foundational Core and the Signature Core. Together, they are a total of 42-48 credits. WIC and Beyond OSU are completed within the student’s major.
  • Role of the Committee – Develops and approves strategy, policy and planning for the Core Ed programs. Reviews content and appropriateness for the Core Ed program. Evaluates proposals for additional and new courses deemed relevant to the core and stimulate proposals for additional and new courses and advise faculty in preparation of such proposals. Provides consultation on administrative inquiries.
  • Committee processes – The co-chairs explained the processes by which the committee works and makes decisions, how they tie to Faculty Senate processes and how the Core Education Committee works with other committees and councils.

The co-chairs explained how the review work is disseminated among the committee members, that a link to a Qualtrics form will be sent to the committee members to submit their review, and the review will be discussed during the next available meeting. Committee members were instructed on what to look for when reviewing the Statement of Intent (SOI) and course proposals.

General Education Assessment went over the review form and what to look for in CIM. Heath Henry is available for questions if new committee members have questions about filling out their forms.

  • Tasks for 2025-26 – Reviewing courses from the 2023-25 SOI process, reviewing new SOIs, reviewing the Arts & Humanities and Difference, Power & Oppression course cap study, Assessment Cycle Update, develop cat review process, other matters arising.
